Last day. Boo. But like I’ve been saying, I
think we are both ready to go home. We miss our bed. When we travel, we always
miss our bed. Our bed is amazing. (Have I mentioned our bed?) The alarm went
off at 3:30 am and simultaneously the phone rang with the wake-up call. “How do
you hang this up?” Laura mumbled in the dark from the bed as I went to the desk
to turn off the alarm on my phone. “What do you mean? It’s a phone!” I had to
turn on the nightstand light to figure it out. Uhem.
We got ready, finished packing (for the last
time! Whee!) and headed downstairs. The night manager and the car driver were
there—in the dark—and we went out on the walkways of Venice, dragging our bags,
and walking over more bridges and canals—until we got to the bus
station-slash-taxi stand. Our van was there and we loaded up and headed off to
the Venice airport.
Checking in took a while. We are flying
airberlin (all lower case, all one word) because a.) it offered a flight that
worked for us and b.) we were able to get a decent price ticket. We took a bus
out to the plane to discover…a small prop plane. Laura hates when we fly Delta
to Salt Lake City to see Bryce because of the tiny 2+2 regional jets they fly
there. The turbulence makes her sick to her stomach every time. Fortunately,
the airberlin prop plane wasn’t so bad and we arrived in Dusseldorf an hour and
50 minutes later.
With a five and a half hour layover, we had a
leisurely (though not good) breakfast and then cleared immigration before
locating the lounge where we camped out and read until it was time for our
flight to L.A.
It’s good to be home and in our familiar
place with our own bed, pillows, shower, coffee, etc. We had a great trip and
saw and did a lot of really wonderful things. What a honeymoon!
